L17 - Normstahl torsion spring for sectional garage doors

Price:

106.88 EUR + VAT

The springs are galvanized both inside and outside. Their lifting characteristics are the same as those of conventional (L17) springs, so they lift the door very precisely. When adjusting the spring, wind it to the same number of turns as the previous spring. The winding value is indicated on your Normstahl garage door. An aluminium spring winding cone is not supplied with the spring. The durability of the spring is equal to or greater than that of the original.

Which spring do I need?

  • There is sometimes a yellow or white label on the spring. It contains a number beginning with the letter L or R, for example L8 or R12.
  • If there is no number beginning with L or R on the spring label, simply send us a photo of the label to the email address below. We may be able to identify it.
  • The door's data plate does not state which springs are suitable for it. However, for certain Euro doors we can calculate the correct spring from the information on the data plate.
  • If there is no spring label, the quickest solution is to measure the springs on both sides according to our measuring guide: Measuring guide Also photograph them according to our photo guide: Photo guide. Then send us the measurements and photos to the email address below.

If you are not exactly sure which spring you need, it is better not to buy it and to call us instead!

What is the length of the L17-es spring? And its diameter?

We do not publish the physical dimensions of the L17-es spring because it is very difficult to measure a stretched or broken spring and identify it correctly from the dimensions alone. There are many opportunities for error. Just a few millimetres of measurement inaccuracy can cause you to select the wrong spring from the list. In addition, some webshops list the dimensions of original springs inaccurately. Approximately every tenth spring is selected incorrectly by customers and has to be returned to us. This causes unnecessary extra cost and wasted time. We therefore ask you to measure the springs on both sides according to the measuring guide and email us the dimensions. Also measure the width and height of the door and send us a photo of the door's data plate.

If the spring shown above only looks similar to yours, it is better to write to us than to buy the wrong one and then lose several days returning it and waiting for a new spring to be sent.

Different springs on the same door?

Yes! With Normstahl doors, it is not certain that the same (L17) spring is fitted on both sides! They may look identical, but that does not necessarily mean they are. Check the label on both springs or measure both sides.

Do I need to replace both springs?

No. You do not have to. But it is recommended. Do not replace both springs if you cannot afford to do so. The spring on the other side may last another year. However, if you can afford to replace both, it is worth doing because there will be only one installation cost. Garage door installers usually recommend replacing both springs because sometimes the spring that was still intact breaks during the replacement process. This is very inconvenient for installers, and it can be difficult to explain to the door owner that they did not cause the problem during installation. Overall, if you can, have both springs replaced, because this will cause you the least trouble in the long term.

Before installing the L17-es spring

If possible, do not use the Normstahl sectional garage door until the new L17-es springs have been installed. If you must use it, manually compensate for the force of the broken spring. Release the spring break safety device so the door can be closed. When operating the door with the garage door opener, help lift it at the same time. When closing the door, also take some of the door's weight by hand.

During installation of the L17-es spring

Because of the strength of the new spring, it may not need to be wound as much as the previous spring. Check the data plate to see how much it should be wound.

After installation

If you feel that the new L17-es spring is not working properly, please contact us. We will help you determine what installation error may have occurred. If you accidentally ordered the wrong spring, we will help you find the correct one for your door.

Does the L17-es spring break frequently?

On a residential Normstahl garage door, a spring usually lasts at least 5 years, but it can also last 17–20 years. If a spring lasts less than 5 years, there may be three reasons. Two of them are caused by incorrect installation, and one by excessive use. We explain these in more detail below.

First reason: excessive door use

A residential Normstahl garage door is designed for approximately a few openings per day. If the whole family also uses the garage door for pedestrian traffic, the intended number of openings can easily be multiplied, and in this case the spring may need to be replaced every 2–3 years. The most practical solution is to use a separate pedestrian door. However, there are situations where the amount of traffic cannot be reduced, for example when a residential garage door is installed in an apartment building. If there are not 2 cars but 20 behind one door, the load on the door is obviously about ten times greater. Residential Normstahl doors handle this surprisingly well, but more frequent servicing should be expected. A good solution may be a L17-es spring designed for a higher number of cycles. We can custom-manufacture springs with the same lifting force as conventional L17-es springs, but capable of withstanding many more openings. Unfortunately, we do not yet sell these springs in the webshop, but if you would like to purchase one, please write to the contact address below.

Second reason: over-tensioning

Check the value written on the data plate (Federspannung: x,x) and wind the spring to that value. It is important to know that this is only an approximate value and sometimes a small adjustment away from it is necessary. A new spring can sometimes feel too strong; in that case, do not wind it all the way to the specified value, but slightly less. The spring is correctly adjusted when the door, left halfway open, does not move up or down by itself. After about one month, check whether the spring has weakened enough to require additional winding. If you wind the spring more than Normstahl specifies, its service life may be significantly reduced. We consider it over-tensioned when the spring is wound more than half a turn above the value specified on the door. Never over-tension the springs!

Third reason: coil binding

Another common problem is when the coils are pressed together. When the door is closed, the spring is tensioned. In this tensioned state, there must be a small gap between the coils. It is enough if a sheet of paper can be inserted between them. If this is possible, there is no problem. If not, the coils must be pulled slightly apart. WARNING! RISK OF INJURY! Have a professional separate the coils.
