Spring identification

If the garage door is installed with a Hörmann 751 tension spring, a spring with a different type number cannot be used.

To identify the Hörmann garage door spring, you need to look for a 3-digit number stamped or engraved into the metal part in the end of the spring. The number starts with 7.

If there is no number in the upper part (not the pulley part, but the other part), it is located at the bottom. This number is often not visible from the dirt. It is stamped with tiny digits, so it can be covered by even a little dirt. Wipe it with a rag and you will see the number. If you have an older Hörmann garage door tension spring, please contact us by email. (If the spring is installed horizontally and the type number is two digits.)

What to do if we do not see number on the spring or on the garage door and all we know that the garage door is Hörmann branded?

If there is no number on the spring than the Hörmann garage door dataplate also can help. (It sometimes has the type number on it.)

The measurement of the Hörmann spring not suitable for identification. Measuring a loose spring and identifying it based on the dimensions is difficult. There is a lot of opportunity for error. Why you should buy spring for both sides for your garage door?

We sell the 751 spring in pair for Hörmann garage door because if one side spring have already broken than the other side, still working spring is already streched out and lost from its strenght. If you change only one side spring, the garage door will not work properly. Even though you have an old 751 spring on the one side on the garage door and a new 751 spring for the another side on the garage door, the garage door will pull to one side. And of course, the old spring can break at any moment.

If 1 spring only has broken (the outside spring or the inside spring) still worth replacing all the springs, because the other springs will also break soon. So it is practically impossible to save money by exchanging them individually.

We sell the 751 springs for hörmann garage doors only in assembled condition and not the separetaly parts. If any part of it is ruined, you should change all of it including the pulleys too. The springs for Hörmann garage doors are so difficult to assemble at home than we would not recommend for you.

Information about Installation

After purchase, before installation

If it is possible do not use the Hörmann garage door until the new springs are installed. If it is not possible to use the garage door than replace the broken spring by hand. When you move the garage door with the garage door operator, lift the door by hand, too. Stand on the side of the garage door where more springs are broken. If the same amount of springs are broken for both sides of the garage door than stand in the middle of your garage door. When closing it, you also have to lift the garage door a little by hand. Considering that is not possible to lift the garage door by hand like the broken spring did it before, therefore the operator will stop many times and will reopen from time to time.
If the operator reopens the door than put less power into the lifting. If the operator stops while opening than put more power into lifting the garage door.

During installation

Keep the wrapper if by any reason you have to send the product back.
If there is an invoice on the package, keep it, because you may need it for example: managing warranty matters.

It is possible that the new 751 spring seems shorter. 1-2 cm difference could be in the springs but mostly the springs seems shorter because the old springs are streched out and can not take the original form.

Attention! Danger of accident!

Only garage door repairman should replace the spare parts in the Hörmann garage door.

Install the spring only with open garage door. If the garage door is closed than the spring is tensioned and it is very hazardious.
When installing, remove only one spring at a time. And install the new spring straight away. Then do the same with the other spring. Do not install the springs for both sides at once.

What do you need for installing/ removing the springs?
You must not install the spring alone. The duty of the other person: pay attention to garage door still opened, and not fall down, while you (or another person) install the spring. If there is garage door operator on the garage door, then open the garage door with the garage door opener, and pull the plug of the garage door operator from the socket. Do not use the emergency release on the garage door operator. So garage door operator can help to not the garage door falls down, while installing. After you hang the spring, do not forget to turn the fixing screw the bottom of the spring.

Installing Hörmann 751 spring.

Hang the springs at same height on both side. Do not hang the springs on different heights, because your garage door will pull to one side and will not work properly. If you do not put the end of the springs on the same height on both side of the garage door then it will unnecessarily abrade the pulley. Therefore the garage door will fail sooner.

The tension of the spring must be checked by releasing the garage door operator from the garage door so that you open the door by hand. Open the garage door by hand around 1 meter high. If the door starts to sink under its own weight, put more tension to the spring. If the door starts to rise, weaken the force of the spring, hang it higher. The wire cable should always be tight. Even if the door is fully opened, the wire cable has to always remain tight. Otherwise the wire cable will fall out of the pulley and will jam next to the pulley. This will render the garage door inoperable.

The new 751 spring is not stronger than the old 751 spring just looks like. The old spring is weakened. That is why new ressort looks stronger. The new spring may not have to be hung at the same place where the old spring was hung. It rarely happens with wide and low Hörmann doors that the spring is still strong when hang in the top position. This is because you have a low and heavy garage door. Then you can do nothing with it. You should use the strong spring like that and over time it becomes weaker enough for the garage door to work fine. This can also happen with the original spring, considering that our spring is not stronger than the original one.

After installation the new, spare parts spring will click at the first 1-3 opening and closing. These click are normal at the test opening and closing.

If after the 3 test opening there is still click noise then hold the spring and one of the plate at the end of the spring and twist them a little. Pay attention the spring head to be in place and do not get caught up at the door when moving.

If only few times you hear the click noise, check the spring if it touches the garage door somewhere.

After changing the spring you should always reset the garage door operator (motor) and re-teach it. (Even if you have Hörmann or other branded door.) The reason why you need to do this because the operator only knows your old streched out spring. And do not know that the spring has been replaced.
This step is different in every garage door operator. Look for the garage door operator description. Do not start it without the description. If you do not find the garage door operator description on the internet then take a photo of the garage door operator and the dataplate of the garage door operator and send them to us. If you have done with the steps above it is worth to do a little maintenance on the garage door now. Check the roller to be able to turn easily. When the garage door is closed, the roller should not be under tension. Loosen on the roller if you can not spin it. Pour oil into the oil hole at the axis of the roller. ( Only at the roller. Do not pour oil into the bearing pulley at the spring.) Oil the hinged.
Clean the rail with rag. The rail must not be lubricated with oil or other products!!! If there is any contamination in the rail and can not be removed, use cleanser that dissolves the contamination but not corrode the zinc coating. Read the description of the cleansing product.

After installation

After you set up the 751 spring on your Hörmann garage door and work well, after 1-2 months, check the strength of the spring by moving it manually. The spring might weakened so you should tighten it a little. Repeat this procedure once a year and adjust the spring. You save the garage door operator like that.

The pulley of the Hörmann 751 spring does not require oil or any maintenance. But the Hörmann garage door needs it. Get periodic maintenace.

If you chosed the correct product, installed it correctly and do the periodic maintinence then the Hörmann garage door can work well even for years.

If you heard a bang from your garage or the garage door is not opening then probably your spring is broken what should lift the garage door.

To identify the spring first need to know the garage door brand.
This information can be found on the garage door dataplate.
Sometimes you find the spring type number or measurements on the garage door dataplate.
In the case of Hörmann brand sometimes you find the typenumber there.
If you do not find the typenumber on the garage door dataplate, then you should check the typenumber on the spring.
There are some branded springs ( for example Hörmann branded garage door) where the type number is shown.
The typenumber is either stamped in the end of the spring or on the label of the spring.
